Lead Time of Machined Parts from Turkey to Europe

Updated 2026-11-03 · 7 min read

The lead time of a machined part from Turkey is the sum of seven consecutive stages: quote and order confirmation, material, production, inspection and documents, export clearance, road transit and import clearance. Only transit has a typical figure we can state, five to ten days by road from Bursa to central Europe; every other stage depends on the part, the material and the supplier's load and has to be agreed per order.

What stages make up the lead time of a machined part from Turkey?

A quoted "lead time" hides seven stages that run one after another and have different owners. Splitting them shows which ones a buyer can influence and which ones only the supplier or the forwarder controls.

Stages 1 to 4 depend on the part and the drawing; stages 5 to 7 are logistics and customs work. For the commercial side of the same chain see sourcing machined parts from Turkey.

Where does the lead time clock start and stop?

One order has several valid lead times. It can be ready at the workshop on one date, collected by your carrier on a second and delivered to your dock on a third. A quoted figure is only comparable with another quote if both use the same start and stop event.

Incoterms 2020, the ICC rules, settle part of this. Under FCA the seller delivers when the goods are loaded onto the buyer's transport at the seller's premises, or ready for unloading from the seller's vehicle at another named place; risk passes at that moment. Under DAP the seller delivers when the goods are at the buyer's disposal on the arriving vehicle at the named destination, ready for unloading, and the buyer handles import clearance. The same part therefore has a shorter lead time under FCA than under DAP without a single day changing in the real schedule.

Incoterms do not fix the lead time itself. They also leave out when title passes, the documents the seller must supply for the buyer's customs clearance, and liability for late delivery, which the sales contract has to cover. Incoterms 2020 for Turkey–EU shipments goes through the terms in detail.

NoteWrite two events into the order: the start (for example, purchase order and approved drawing received) and the stop (for example, goods at the consignee's dock). A quote with one lead-time figure and no events cannot be checked afterwards.

How long does road transit from Bursa to central Europe take?

Five to ten days is the typical range for road transport from Bursa to central Europe. The range covers transit only, not machining, inspection or clearance at either end.

The figure is counted in days, and EU driver rules set the pace of each day. Under Regulation (EC) No 561/2006, as the European Commission summarises it, daily driving may not exceed 9 hours, extendable to 10 hours twice a week; a break of at least 45 minutes is due after 4.5 hours of driving; and the daily rest period is at least 11 hours, which may be reduced to 9 hours up to three times a week. Weekly driving is capped at 56 hours and fortnightly driving at 90 hours.

Within the 5 to 10 days, the spread comes from factors outside the rules: the route and whether it combines road with a sea leg (see road and sea routes from Bursa to Europe), the queue at the border, and whether the truck carries one consignment or a consolidated load that stops at several suppliers. Ask the forwarder for the actual transit times of its last shipments on your lane, not for the nominal one.

What happens at customs, and what can add time?

Customs duty does not add time. For industrial goods the EU–Türkiye customs union gives zero customs duties and zero quotas, provided the goods travel with proof of their customs status, which is the A.TR movement certificate issued by the Turkish competent authorities. Coal and steel products are outside the customs union. Delay comes from paperwork that is wrong or late. The EU–Türkiye customs union for machined parts covers the scope and the A.TR in full.

Three steps matter for the schedule:

  • Export clearance in Türkiye: the export declaration and the A.TR certificate need the final commercial invoice and customs classification, so both must exist before dispatch, not after.
  • Pre-arrival data: since 1 September 2025 road freight entering the EU must be covered by an entry summary declaration in the EU's ICS2 system. Carriers file it; logistics providers and, in some cases, the consignee can file it too. Irish Revenue lists the data required, among them the six-digit HS code, the consignee's EORI number and the seller's and buyer's names and addresses. Some Member States had temporary derogations in 2025; as of the Commission notice of 29 August 2025 the forwarder has to confirm which rule applies at your entry point.
  • Transit procedure: Türkiye has been a party to the Common Transit Convention since 1 December 2012. According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, a T1 procedure can cover the whole transport under a single declaration and guarantee, which reduces the formalities at crossing points. Ask whether your forwarder uses it and where import clearance takes place.

Which Turkish holidays change the schedule?

The public holidays fixed by Law No. 2429 apply to every stage that happens in Türkiye, including the workshop and the Turkish customs offices. The two religious holidays follow the lunar calendar and fall earlier in the Gregorian calendar every year, so check the dates for the production window of each order.

The law sets the minimum. Whether a workshop stays closed longer around a bayram is a question for the supplier, and the answer belongs in the order confirmation. The receiving side has its own closures, such as year-end plant shutdowns, and they count against the stop event in the same way.

How do you shorten the lead time without relying on a promised date?

A promised date only restates the stages above. A shorter lead time comes from removing waiting at the stages you can reach:

  • Send a complete package. Stage 1 shrinks when the drawing states tolerances, material, surface and quantity. The CAD data package for quotes lists what a workshop needs to quote without guessing.
  • Release material early. Material procurement can start as soon as the order is confirmed, so settle the alloy and the certificate requirement with the order.
  • Agree the inspection scope up front. A first article report sits between production and shipment, so fix its scope before the order; see first article inspection to AS9102.
  • Have the invoice and customs classification ready at dispatch. Stages 5 and 7 depend on them.
  • Choose the Incoterm for the stage you want to control. Under FCA you book the main carriage; under DAP the seller books it and you clear the goods on import.

Then measure. For each of your first orders, record seven dates: order confirmed, material received, production complete, inspection released, pick-up, arrival at the EU border and delivery. The gaps between them give the real duration of each stage for your parts and your lane, which is worth more than any generic figure, including the ones in this article.

Frequently asked questions

How long does delivery of machined parts from Turkey to Europe take?
Road transit from Bursa to central Europe is typically five to ten days. That figure covers transit only. Quote, material, machining, inspection, export clearance and import clearance come on top, and their length depends on the part, the material and the supplier's load, so it has to be agreed per order.
What does lead time mean on a supplier's quote?
It depends on where the supplier starts and stops the clock. The same order can be ready at the workshop, collected under FCA or delivered under DAP on different dates. Ask for the start event (for example, purchase order plus approved drawing) and the stop event (for example, goods at your dock) in writing.
Does the EU–Türkiye customs union remove border formalities?
It removes customs duties on industrial goods, but not the formalities. The goods still need proof of customs status, an A.TR movement certificate, and a pre-arrival entry summary declaration is required for road freight entering the EU.
Which Turkish public holidays affect lead time?
Law No. 2429 sets Ramazan Bayramı at 3.5 days and Kurban Bayramı at 4.5 days, each counted from 13:00 on the day before. It also fixes public holidays on 1 January, 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and 29 October, and private workplaces must close on 29 October.
Can a supplier guarantee a delivery date?
Only for the stages it controls, and only per order. A typical transit time is not a guarantee. Ask the forwarder for the actual transit times of its last shipments on your route, and record the milestone dates of your own first orders.
