Casting + machining

Housings and bodies cast in sand, investment or die casting, sourced in our Bursa network and machined to your drawing. One supplier for the casting and the machining. Send STEP and a PDF drawing; we come back with a route, a price and a lead time.

When casting is the right choice

Casting suits complex, closed shapes with internal cavities: pump and gear housings, valve bodies, brackets with ribs. The casting gives the shape; machining gives the bores, faces and threads that must be accurate.

Sand casting needs the least tooling and suits low quantities and large parts. Investment casting gives finer detail and smoother surfaces. Die casting needs a steel die and pays off at higher quantities. At low quantities, milling from solid or a welded assembly can be cheaper. We route it and tell you why.

Design rules that cut cost

  1. Keep wall thickness evenThick and thin sections cool at different rates. Even walls reduce shrinkage, porosity and distortion.
  2. Add draft and radiiFaces that leave the mould need draft, and corners need radii. Sharp corners trap stress and make the mould harder to fill.
  3. Leave machining allowanceMark which faces are machined and leave stock on them. The rest can stay as cast.
  4. Define datums on the castingGive the shop cast datum points for the first clamping. Machined features then relate to the casting in a known way.
  5. Tolerance only machined featuresBores, sealing faces and threads get their own tolerance. As-cast surfaces follow the casting tolerance on the drawing.
